Richard Baer, a long standing member of Mensa, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, May 26, 2018, at the Royal Jubilee Hospice.
Richard was our monthly Pool Night host at the University Club. Before his cancer took hold, he was working on plans to get our members out for a hike/cycle along the Matheson Lake portion of the Galloping Goose.
Though Richard was a librarian, teacher, and avid cyclist, reality is that he was an adventurer at heart who cared deeply for his family and friends.
As one of our members mentioned to me the other day, “Richard’s passing leaves a big hole in the universe.”
Here is a link to the notice published in The Times Colonist on 8 June 2018:
At that webpage there’s also a guestbook you can view and sign.
Here’s an excerpt from that announcement: “A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at The University Club on Monday, July 9th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We invite everyone to wear their favourite Hawaiian shirts and we will bring Richard’s collection if anyone would like to borrow one. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice at the Royal Jubilee, the Cancer Agency, or Amnesty International.”
